A Word From Jane Shepard...

The question most often posed by KICKASS fans has been: “Why aren’t there more strong works for women like this?!” Actually, there are. Current commercial theater just doesn’t value or produce them much. In fact, there are less productions by, or even about, women than at any time since the 1970’s. Without commercial production, new plays are not seen or reviewed, and so are harder for publishers to discover. If they don’t appear in publisher’s catalogues, they aren’t available for consideration by community, regional and university theaters.

The good news is, whether it’s plays about women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, or simply more meaningful themes, you do have a say about what’s being produced. Play publishers are genuinely interested in knowing what people want more of. Producers are rarely asked, ”When can we have a new play with a female cast?” Regional theaters often feel a responsibility to the taste of their audiences, but only hear from a limited portion of them.

The greatest irony is to feel powerless where one has not yet tested one’s voice. KICKASS PLAYS was my effort in that direction. With its plays rejected by all publishers, I e-published and marketed the collection myself, proving its commercial viability. I am delighted and proud of this new Samuel French Inc. edition. They have been great to work with. Now it is your turn. The American theater is a constant new horizon. Whether it is your own art, the theater industry, or democracy, may you find the power of your own kickass voice!

Power on!
